Reasoning on the themes of religion/violence/peace means questioning the link
that is assumed to exist between these terms and through which lenses one chooses
to observe them. Some authors consider the phenomenon of religious violence as a
phenomenon intrinsically linked to the religions themselves. Others question that a
direct link can be established between religions and forms of violence considered
religious. The debate on religion/violence/peace is invested by the developments of
the theories of secularization and by the transformations in the approaches to the
secular and religious categories. Ulrich Beck and Jürgen Habermas both placed
themselves in the last part of their career in this process of transformation,
questioning, sometimes with some effort and ambiguity and not without criticism,
their previous positions.

What does it mean exactly "religious comeback"? Social scientists, historians, philosophers have debated on it since Nineties. One aspect of particular relevance is that of the concepts and the words chosen: their origins, different meanings and uses in different contexts, disciplines and languages. The aim of this paper is to make the point on such different uses and on the theories behind them, from secular to postsecular, from secularism to laïcité.

Political secularism in the "postsecular age" faces new issues that question traditional conceptions and tools. Contemporary debates explore how fundamental principles like freedom of conscience, equality, neutrality, separation can be assured in societies with a high levels of pluralism and new kind of conflicts.

The debate over the concept of ‘postsecular’ has grown in the last decades gathering both supporters and critics. Originated from the formulation made by Jürgen Habermas, the ‘postsecular turn’ became one of the most successful concepts in the long history of the theory of secularization. Many contemporary analysis of the role of religion in society and politics can be read in the postsecular frame. The aim of this paper is to sum up different aspects and formulations of ‘postsecular’ and show the potential of this approach for understanding contemporary relationships between society, religion and politics.

The aim of this essay is to examine the connection between contemporary debates on political
secularism and institutional arrangements between State and religions on one hand, and, on
the other, on secularization theory and its latest ‘rebirth’: postsecularism. Analysing the link
between the theories and concept of postsecular society and the debate on political
secularism and its institutional forms and practices allows to understand the
multidimensionality of the latter in its very latest theorisations and realizations.
